Cyprus is taking a significant step towards sustainable energy with the launch of its first hydrogen production and refuelling station in the Aradippou area of Larnaca. The project has already secured all necessary permits as well as €7.5 million in funding, 60% of which comes from European sources.

Scale and capabilities of the project

The station will have the capacity to produce up to 150 tonnes of hydrogen per year, equivalent to approximately 627 tonnes of diesel fuel. In its initial phase, the project will primarily serve public and heavy vehicles such as buses, trucks, and specialised transport. Expansion to private vehicles is planned for the future.

The government is also considering the introduction of subsidy schemes for hydrogen-powered vehicles, similar to the incentives that were previously available for electric cars.

Why hydrogen?

Unlike conventional fuels, hydrogen can be produced using renewable energy sources and serve as a flexible energy storage medium — generated, stored, and deployed whenever needed.

In the transport sector, hydrogen offers several advantages over electric vehicles:

·       Rapid refuelling, eliminating long charging times.

·       Extended range, without limitations tied to battery capacity.

·       Lower long-term carbon footprint compared to traditional fuels.

A step toward a sustainable future

The hydrogen station project in Larnaca is part of a broader national strategy to diversify Cyprus’ energy mix and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. Beyond its environmental benefits, it also creates new investment opportunities: developing infrastructure, stimulating demand for next-generation vehicles, and integrating Cyprus into Europe’s emerging hydrogen ecosystem.
